GOAL

To transform, redesign and re-engineer primary healthcare in India for provision of equitable, comprehensive and client-centered PHC that contributes to improved health outcomes for India’s marginalized and vulnerable populations, especially women and girls.

OBJECTIVES

  • Support the national and state governments in their efforts to implement the GoI’s vision of a Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) system through effective and responsive technical assistance.
  • Establish an ecosystem for innovations and a strong learning agenda for designing, incubating, and testing innovative solutions to address some of the key intractable barriers that impede the delivery of CPHC in India and use the learnings generated to inform the overall design of CPHC by the GoI.
  • Facilitate strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors through establishment of platforms, alliances, and advisory group for CPHC in India.

SUMMARY

The NISHTHA project implemented by Jhpiego aims to transform, redesign and re-engineer primary healthcare in India for the provision of equitable, comprehensive, and client-centered primary healthcare that contributes to improved health outcomes for India’s marginalized and vulnerable populations, especially women and girls. NISHTHA supports the creation of a strong, responsive, accessible, sustainable, and affordable primary healthcare system that ensures effective delivery of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health services and integrates the provision of quality services for control of tuberculosis. NISHTHA is also working to strengthen India's Covid-19 response. Through the USAID/India Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund, the project provides need-based technical assistance for COVID-19 response at the national level, in the 12 project intervention states, and in non-intervention states through a rapid response unit.

WORK DONE AROUND COVID-19

NISHTHA's work around COVID-19 include strengthening disease surveillance mechanisms at primary healthcare level for early detection of diseases and building resilient health systems that are better prepared to face future public health threats. The project has strengthened the availability of medical oxygen at the primary health care level through strategic technical assistance in operationalization of PSA plants and Oxygen Concentrators, along with building the capacities of government health workforce for sustainable and rationale use of medical oxygen. In addition, strategic technical assistance at national, state and district level across the intervention geographies is provided; rapid response to the articulated needs of the non-intervention states for a robust and comprehensive COVID-19 response is ensured; and state specific innovative solutions for strengthening COVID response across intervention and non-intervention states are co-designed and implemented.
