This article traces the journey of the National Health Mission towards achieving  universal health coverage. It highlights specific challenges of health financing budgets and in redesigning health systems. As a way forward, this article suggests strengthening the regulatory framework, institutions and public health facilities to ensure competition and create choices in the healthcare market. It also makes other suggestions to develop synergies between various elements of the health infrastructure and prevent escalation of healthcare costs.
