Universal Health Coverage (UHC) ensures that all people, everywhere, can get the quality health services they need without financial hardship. Every year, UHC day on December 12 advocates worldwide mobilization to call for strong, equitable health systems that #LeaveNoOneBehind.

This year the theme for UHC Day 2020 is ‘Health for All’, against the backdrop of a global pandemic that has claimed millions of lives, particularly among those who were already health-vulnerable. To end this crisis and build a safer and healthier future, it requires investments in health systems that #ProtectUsAll.

To mark this day, in this edition of The Byte, we present insightful pieces from the Learning4impact knowledge pool for health sector experts, implementers and policymakers to call for health systems equity.

The Human Capital Index 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed several countries towards backsliding on hard-won gains in human capital development. At this time, the 2020 Human Capital Index report developed by the World Bank highlights the effects of this shock on progress in development outcomes, particularly for children. It also offers perspectives on how countries can address backsliding through policy and programs.

'The ultimate test of preparedness is response'. Global assessments of preparedness for health emergencies have failed to be predictive in the current pandemic. The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board assesses the key challenges and lessons from the present situation in building crisis-proof systems that work for the most vulnerable- especially in terms of leadership, systems architecture and information and behaviour.

PMNCH, CORE Group and UHC2030 will convene partners across the globe for a virtual summit to take stock of how COVID-19 is impacting the progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) commitments.
