One of the most significant risks to global public health in the twenty-first century is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The first WHO Global Report on AMR Surveillance, released in April 2014, gathered data from national and international surveillance networks for the first time, demonstrating the scope of this phenomenon across the globe as well as the existence of significant gaps in the current surveillance.
