The readiness and response capabilities of government organisations, hospitals and clinics, public health agencies, and university researchers have been put to the test by a series of public health catastrophes during the previous ten years. Our future ability to better achieve the overarching goals of preparedness and response—preventing injury, illness, disability, and death and supporting recovery—depends on the knowledge that is generated through well-designed, successfully carried out research before, during, and after an emergency.
